One of the most visited places by tourists and locals in Pyatigorsk, as well as a favorite holiday destination, is Mount Mashuk. At its peak stands a TV tower, which is the dominant structure in the surrounding area. From the height of Mount Mashuk, a breathtaking panorama of the Caucasus foothills and the Greater Caucasus Range with Mount Elbrus and Mount Kazbek opens up, as well as a panorama of the city of Pyatigorsk and its surroundings. The height of Mount Mashuk is 993 meters above sea level. There are two paths leading to the top of Mount Mashuk: a long health trail (terrenkur) and a cable car. Climbing the health trail is a difficult and long exercise even in good weather, as it winds almost all the way around the mountain, while the ascent by cable car takes no more than 5 minutes. The cable car was built in 1971 using a unique support-free technology. It is in itself an interesting exhibit of engineering solutions and a visual aid for the action of the fundamental laws of physics. In 2.5 to 3 minutes, passengers cover a distance of 964 meters. The cable car operates on the pendulum principle: the cabins from the bottom and top depart simultaneously and meet exactly in the center, traveling at the same speed. The capacity of a cabin is 20 people. Almost every tourist visiting Pyatigorsk and other cities of the Caucasian Mineral Waters takes home a photo of the cable car, even if they do not ride it to the top. The cable car is located on the 'main excursion route' of Pyatigorsk, leading to the famous Proval (The Sinkhole), a visit to which is a must for everyone coming to this region. Gagarin Boulevard passes under the cable car, connecting this resort area with the main roads of the city and the location of the most popular Pyatigorsk health resorts.
