The history of the circus in Kazan spans more than 100 years. The first permanent circus in Kazan was built in 1890 by the founders of the national Russian circus, the Nikitin brothers. It was a wooden circus located on Bannoye Lake. In 1924, the Kazan Circus received state status. The building constructed by the Nikitins stood for almost forty years. In 1928, to replace the Nikitin circus, a new building was erected on the same site—also made of wood. The circus was named after the eighth anniversary of the Tatar ASSR. Although the new structure was soon reconstructed and adapted for winter performances, it served for just over thirty years. In 1961, the circus was closed due to its dilapidated condition, and this, in fact, marks the end of the history of the old Kazan Circus associated with the name of the Nikitin brothers. The semi-ruined building eventually caught fire like a torch and burned to the ground. And... the history of the new Kazan State Circus begins. That very 'flying saucer' whose cosmic silhouette has now become an integral part of the modern urban landscape, a kind of exotic landmark at the foot of the ancient Kremlin hill. The grand opening of the new Kazan Circus building took place on December 9, 1967. This unique structure, equipped with state-of-the-art circus technology, was built according to the design of architect G. M. Pichuev and engineers O. I. Berim and E. Yu. Brudny. The spatial composition of the building is as original as it is classically simple and elegant. Indeed, the circus looks like two tightly closed giant shell bowls. The monolithic reinforced concrete conical shell without internal supports is the truly original feature of the building.
