The "German" Airfield
In the gorge opening, as we reach Emanuel Glade, the German airfield comes into view at an altitude of 2,850 meters. It is a completely flat plateau about a kilometer wide, where theoretically even a heavy bomber could land. Between August 17, 1942, and January 10, 1943, when German forces held Mount Elbrus, local mountain dwellers reportedly saw planes regularly landing on this clearing.
Waterfalls of Dzhily-Su
Sultan is considered the highest waterfall, standing at around forty meters. Located at the source of the Malka River, this section has historically been called the Fire River (Kyzylkol). In summer, the waterfall takes on a yellowish-gray hue due to clay and sand deposits washed down from melting glaciers.
Portal to Another World
We will cross the Kalinov Bridge—a mythical portal between the living world and the underworld. Legend says that an earthly paradise once bloomed here near Mount Alatyr (modern-day Elbrus), alongside the Smorodina River, named not for berries but for the sulfurous stench of volcanic lava.
