Kazan Federal University
Kazan University is one of the three oldest classical universities in Russia with several of the oldest and most important scientific schools and societies in Russia.
On November 5 (17), 1804, Emperor Alexander I signed the Affirmative Certificate and Charter of Kazan University.
In 1814, the so-called “complete discovery” of the classical university took place in four departments: moral and political sciences, physical and mathematical sciences, medical sciences and verbal sciences.
Before the foundation of Tomsk, Kazan University was the easternmost university of the Russian Empire: its okrug included the Volga region, the Kama region, the Urals, Siberia and the Caucasus.
In the first decades of its existence, Kazan University (together with the first Kazan gymnasium) was a leading center for the study of oriental languages and oriental studies.
